World Autism Pride Day is celebrated on June 18 and seeks to raise awareness about autism, a neurological condition that affects the way a person communicates, interacts and perceives the world around them.
The Anelo Institute celebrated the date by releasing the music video for the song Mundo Azul (Blue World). Arranged by Fernando Baeta and featuring the voices of Aline Ramos and Luccas Soares, the song was inspired by 4-year-old João, who was diagnosed with ASD and is the son of Luccas, who also wrote the song.
Since its inception in 2005, World Autism Pride Day has made significant progress, fighting discrimination, valuing diversity, rights and the inclusion of autistic people. The understanding of autism as a natural variation of neurodiversity has gained ground, replacing the view of disease or disability.
In addition, public policies have been implemented to guarantee the rights of autistic people, such as access to inclusive education, inclusion in the job market and comprehensive health care. Society has made efforts to promote inclusive and welcoming spaces where autistic people can fully exercise their citizenship. But there is still a lot to be done.
