Dom Avelar Museum: - Have you heard of the Fumiê? 🧐

This artifact carries a history marked by faith, resistance, and religious persecution. In Japan, during the period when Christianity was banned, the fumie was an image of Jesus Christ or the Virgin Mary that people suspected of being Christians were forced to trample on as a way to prove they did not follow the Christian faith.

Many refused, while others, even though forced to trample on the image, continued to practice their faith in secret. This gave rise to communities known as Japan’s “hidden Christians.”
