Teve início no dia 1º de abril a Missão COVID-19 - encampada pela Associação Expedicionários da Saúde (EDS)-, com a montagem de um Pronto Atendimento para oferecer suporte ao Hospital das Clínicas (HC) da Unicamp durante a pandemia do coronavírus. Ao todo, os voluntários da ONG, com o apoio dos profissionais e estudantes de medicina da universidade, realizaram aproximadamente 428 atendimentos, dos quais 24 foram identificados como suspeitos e encaminhados ao HC. Após um mês de trabalho conjunto, no dia 4 de maio a EDS desinstalou a estrutura para que, assim, os voluntários e profissionais envolvidos pudessem concentrar os esforços na entrega de novos leitos hospitalares à cidade.
A Construção do Hospital de Campanha EDS teve início no dia 15 de abril na sede dos Patrulheiros Campinas e ainda está em andamento. Esta nova fase da Missão COVID-19 tem como objetivo entregar à população da Região Metropolitana de Campinas (RMC), na primeira semana de maio, uma estrutura médico-hospitalar completa, de funcionamento independente, com capacidade inicial de 36 dos 54 leitos de cuidados semi-intensivos programados para funcionarem ainda este mês. Além disso, há a previsão da necessidade de expansão para até 108 leitos, que dependerá, fundamentalmente, de novas parcerias e doações. A estrutura final, orçada em cerca de 6 milhões de reais, funcionará de forma suplementar ao sistema municipal de saúde. Assim que concluída a instalação, a estrutura será cedida à gestão da Rede Municipal de Hospitais Mário Gatti que fará a administração e custeio para seu funcionamento.
A EDS reforça que, assim como ocorreu com o Pronto Atendimento, o Hospital de Campanha está sendo construído com recursos próprios da ONG, provenientes de parcerias e doações de pessoas e empresas socialmente responsáveis e sem qualquer tipo de repasse financeiro governamental. “Nossa Missão é entregar à prefeitura, a custo zero, uma estrutura bem equipada para que os profissionais de saúde possam trabalhar com segurança e, principalmente, os pacientes da rede pública tenham atendimento digno durante a pandemia. A expectativa é de que o número de casos cresça muito em nossa região, portanto é importante nos anteciparmos à demanda, ainda que desejemos que os leitos permaneçam vazios”, diz o Fundador e Presidente da ONG Dr. Ricardo Affonso Ferreira.
Em paralelo às ações que vêm sendo executadas em Campinas/SP, a EDS também reúne esforços para seguir cumprindo com sua missão original, cuja essência é oferecer melhores condições de saúde aos povos da floresta. Para isso, diante do agravamento da pandemia no norte do país, enviamos uma primeira remessa de medicamentos, insumos e, principalmente EPIs, de Campinas à São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM), conhecida por ser a cidade mais indígena do Brasil. Já a segunda remessa foi enviada à Itaituba (PA), outro polo importante da região amazônica. A partir destas cidades, todas as doações seguirão para os DISEIs (Distrito Sanitário Especial Indígena) de diferentes regiões. Para dar continuidade a estas ações, buscamos novos parceiros que possam financiar as próximas remessas de auxílio humanitário, já que o norte é a região do país com maior escassez de recursos hospitalares.

Health Expeditionary NGO installs field hospital in Campinas
On April 1, the COVID-19 Mission - taken on by the Health Expeditionaries Association (EDS) - began, with the setting up of an Emergency Department to support Unicamp's Hospital das Clínicas (HC) during the coronavirus pandemic. In all, the NGO volunteers, with the support of medical professionals and students from the university, performed approximately 428 consults, of which 24 were identified as suspects and referred to the HC. After a month of working together, on May 4, EDS uninstalled the structure so that the volunteers and professionals involved could concentrate their efforts on delivering new hospital beds to the city.
Construction of the EDS Field Hospital began on April 15th at the Patrulheiros Campinas headquarters and is still in progress. This new phase of the COVID-19 Mission aims to deliver to the population of the Metropolitan Region of Campinas (RMC), in the first week of May, a complete, independently functioning medical and hospital structure, with initial capacity for 36 of the 54 care beds semi-intensive programs scheduled to work later this month. In addition, a need for expansion to up to 108 bed is forecasts, which will depend, fundamentally, on new partnerships and donations. The final structure, budgeted at approximately R$ 6 million, will work in a supplementary way to the municipal health system. As soon as the installation is completed, the structure will be transferred to the management of the Municipal Hospital Network Mário Gatti, which will manage and fund its operation.
EDS reinforces that, as with the Emergency Service, the Field Hospital is being built with the NGO's own resources, coming from partnerships and donations from socially responsible people and companies and without any type of government financial transfer. “Our Mission is to deliver to the City governmentl, at zero cost, a well-equipped structure so that health professionals can work safely and, mainly, patients from the public system can have dignified care during the pandemic. The expectation is that the number of cases will grow a lot in our region, so it is important to anticipate the demand, even though we want the beds to remain empty”, says the Founder and President of the NGO Dr. Ricardo Affonso Ferreira.
In parallel with the actions that have been carried out in Campinas / SP, EDS also joins efforts to continue fulfilling its original mission, whose essence is to offer better health conditions to the peoples of the forest. For this, in view of the worsening of the pandemic in the north of the country, we sent a first shipment of medicines, supplies and, mainly PPEs, from Campinas to São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM), known for being the most indigenous city in Brazil. The second shipment was sent to Itaituba (PA), another important hub in the Amazon region. From these cities, all donations will go to DISEIs (Special Indigenous Sanitary Districts) from different regions. To continue these actions, we are looking for new partners who can finance the next remittances of humanitarian aid, since the north is the region of the country with the greatest shortage of hospital resources.
