Espaço Viva Mulher restores women's dignity

Gabrielle Brito, 25, found out about Espaço Viva Mulher in 2021, when she enrolled in the make-up and eyebrow design course. Today, as well as being a make-up artist, she has fulfilled her dream of having her own business, a make-up and hair studio, and is back at the Espaço to learn how to do afro braids.

Gabi came to Espaço Viva Mulher (EVM) on the recommendation of her godfather. Insecure, with many dreams in her heart and a great desire to learn in order to change her story, she took the make-up course. The following semester, the teacher had to leave because she was pregnant, Gabi took her place and discovered that teaching was even better than learning!

Like Gabrielle, many women have passed through the Espaço Viva Mulher. An initiative of the Archdiocese of Feira de Santana, the space is a social ministry that offers free training courses and shelter to women in situations of vulnerability or social risk.

At Espaço Viva Mulher, relationships with the women we take in are built on a daily basis, without a set schedule. It's friendly, humanized work, with listening and an attentive eye, to win the trust of these women, who often become part of the Espaço's history, coming back for a visit or even becoming volunteers to work on the project, after they finish their courses.

EVM's activities aim to offer viable social and economic alternatives so that women can improve their living conditions. To this end, all the women who take part in the project, in addition to the courses and workshops, are welcomed, monitored and given psychosocial guidance by volunteer psychologists and therapists.

The project began in 2012 and continues today under the coordination of Sister Augustina Obi, who is part of the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary.

Among these women, their stories are often intertwined with the same goal: - to change their lives and the lives of their families by getting a new job through the courses offered by EVM.

The courses are held every six months and with each new class that opens, more women sign up. When the courses end, the graduation party held by the Space reflects the joy and gratitude of each one of them for the opportunity of a new life!
